We’ve all been there. You wake up later than you wanted and are rushing around to get wherever you need to be (or wherever your kids need to be) and you are stressing, grumpy, and just not feeling it. Two things I’ve learned about myself over the years are 1) I don’t like to feel rushed and 2) I’ve got to take the necessary steps to take care of myself in the morning to set myself up for a successful day. These two things literally make ALL the difference in my day, and I’m sure they will do the same for you too. Here are some of my personal tips to have the best morning ever, but most of these can be swapped out for YOUR favorite activity. Mix it up, try new things, and you’ll eventually hit your groove and there will be only fantastic mornings from here on out, which lead to amazing days, which lead to a blissful life 🙂
Marisa’s Tips for the Best Morning Ever
1) Prepare the night before.
If you are anything like me, you love to plan. Planning makes our busy lives a little easier, and who doesn’t like that? The night before I make sure my lunch is packed and ready to be stored in my FitMark bag, my coffee is set up on a timer so that when we walk in the door from the gym it’s all set, and my gym and work clothes are out and ready (no time to fuss in the morning for this!).
2) Go to bed at the same time every night and get the amount of sleep necessary for YOU.
I go to bed around the same time every single night and I wake up at the same time each morning. This routine is key for me and really helps me out emotionally and mentally. And when it comes to the amount of sleep, each one of us is different. I am a strong believer that we don’t need “more sleep,” but rather, better sleep. For example, I thrive sleeping anywhere from 6-7 hours each night, while my hubby prefers 8 solid hours. Listen to your body, but make sure you are going to bed at an hour that makes sense for your rising time. Waking up in the morning tired will certainly not lead to a happy, productive day.
3) Drink Water Upon Rising.
One of the very first things I do when I wake up is drink water. I leave my a glass of water on my nightstand and start sipping once I turn off my alarm. You’ve just gone many hours without water, so your body is dehydrated and ready to fill up! This little trick will energize you more than coffee, I promise. This is especially important if you are heading to the gym in the morning. I stick to plain water upon rising, but I’ll switch to lemon water when I get back from the gym.
To me, there is nothing better than starting my day with a sweaty, endorphin-producing workout! This sets the tone for a strong, energizing and successful day. My husband and I go to the gym together in the morning (occasional partner workouts!) and we are in and out in 45 minutes feeling ready to seize the day. I mix my workouts up between weightlifting, HIIT, plyometrics, and spinning. In any given training session, I am listening to one of my favorite feel-good podcasts, and audiobook, or my favorite music. And you don’t need to belong to a gym to move in the morning. Take a walk with your pup, run outside, practice yoga in your living room, stretch, jump on your trampoline, or swim in that gorgeous pool you have in your backyard. You will be amazed at how a little movement in the morning sets you up for an incredible day.
5) Listen to Something You Enjoy While You Get Ready.
This ritual has been a game changer for my mornings. I do not have a single morning where my phone is not nearby playing a podcast or audiobook while I get ready. As I’ve mentioned, I am addicted to podcasts, and for good reason – they are full of positivity and great advice from experts to incorporate into your daily life. I’ve found resources that motivate and inspire me, which is an incredible way to tackle your busy day with a smile.
6) Fuel Up.
Whether you are drinking Bulletproof coffee or eating a full meal, make sure you put something in your system to kick start your brain and body for the day ahead. When I’m not drinking BFC, my favorite go-to breakfast is my dreamy, creamy chia pudding. Bonus points if you can prep it the night before.
It’s cliché, but a smile looks good and feels good on everyone. There are some mornings where you’re feeling off, and that’s okay, because we are human and we have emotions and sometimes you can’t shake a feeling off as easily as you want. Try smiling anyway. I promise it will attract all the other happy people and you’ll be back to bliss in no time.
