If you’ve ever wondered what a full-time nutritionist’s day looks like, what their go-to breakfast is, or what their workout looks like (I know I have!), then you are in for a real treat! I had the pleasure of meeting the amazing Charlotte Press on Instagram a few months ago and have been obsessed with her posts since. Her passion for healthy eating, cooking, and fitness are evident in everything she shares, and not a day goes by when I don’t learn something interesting (or delicious!) from her. Also, her story of how she got to where she is now (read: CPA turned nutritionist and personal trainer) is incredible and demonstrates her passion and commitment to living a life of health and sharing it with others.
In our Q & A below, Charlotte shares her diet philosophy (it’s a breath of fresh air!), how she handles stress and her commitment to meal preppin’ on Sundays!
MG: Before we dive into specific questions, can you share your backstory for readers?
CP: I have had a passion for healthy eating, cooking and fitness since a young age and I believe the three go hand in hand. I grew up North of Boston, went to college for business at Emory University in Atlanta, GA then moved to New York City to pursue my (not dreams) of being a certified public accountant. My love of nourishing foods and exercise followed me all the way. After about five years of spending my time in my favorite gym classes and handing out my healthy recipe creations to my CPA co-workers, I realized I was in the wrong field of work and went back for my Master’s degree in nutrition, became a personal trainer, and started my own nutrition practice, Press Start Nutrition. Since then, I haven’t looked back.
MG: Describe a typical day in your life.
CP: Weekdays – wake up, workout (either Peloton or RPM, the gym were my nutrition office is) either stay at RPM for meetings with clients, or go home, shower, come back for meetings. Somewhere in there might be some time to work on client prep (meal plans etc.) or school work (currently a Master’s student). All my meals and snacks are usually always meal-prepped. Dinner is always at home with my husband (usually also meal-prepped for the most part). Weekends I try to mix it up and recently made a goal for my husband and I to try one new thing each weekend (could be anything from a recipe, to a movie, to a new museum to a new bike route!) I’m not a big partier, I like relaxing and productive weekends that leave me feeling energized.
MG: How would you describe your diet/nutrition philosophy?
CP: I believe in intuitive eating rather than counting anything and listening to the body first and foremost. I encourage everyone to eat real, whole foods whenever possible. I also believe each person should choose to eat in a way that makes them feel fulfilled, which, is unique to everyone. I think nutrition is a balance between the mental and physical aspects of eating and making sure BOTH aspects feel healthy and energized and not deprived or restricted. I therefore don’t believe in one type of diet or macro-ratio etc. since I think each person’s perfect balance is unique and within that, each day is unique for each person.
MG: What’s your workout routine look like right now?
CP: I don’t have much of a routine right now since my schedule varies day to day, however, I always try to get my workouts in during the morning if possible. I’m lucky enough to have my nutrition practice/office based out of an amazing bootcamp circuit style gym so I end up doing a “class” there 4-5 times a week and the other days I either practice yoga, ride my Peloton, sometimes do some weights at my home gym or get outside for a walk or bike ride!
MG: Can we see inside your fridge?
CP: It’s mostly full of tupperwares since I’m OBSESSED with meal-prep.
MG: Your must-buy grocery item that you can’t live without?
CP: Too hard to pick just one, is this to survive off of?
MG: What’s your favorite breakfast?
CP: I’m a sweet for breakfast person so right now my obsession has been waffles, loaded with nut butter of course! The other thing I LOVE is anything with oats and lately I’ve been baking protein-packed oat muffins that have been my week-day staple breakfast.
MG: What are you most excited about right now?
CP: I’m really excited about my upcoming trip to Amsterdam and fall (I know I’m the only person who is excited for summer to end) but I’m more excited for fall to come than wishing summer away. What’s not to love about fall!? Crisp air, pumpkins, leaves changing, root veggies, YUM!
MG: What are you working on right now?
CP: Always working toward finishing my Master’s Degree, which takes a lot of focus and energy. My other big “project” is revamping my nutrition services to have more capacity for more clients. I love being my own boss but it’s tough to have no one to ask, “how do I do this?!” Also managing my own time has proven to be a big challenge and something I’m always working to get better at.
MG: What personal habit are you proudest of?
CP: I am extremely thorough in everything I do.
MG: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learned recently?
CP: Starting to wrap my head around how adaptogens work in the body – still don’t fully understand it though.
MG: What’s your favorite emoji to use on Instagram?
CP: The face with its arms out next to it (what’s that face called) any hearts, and the crying/laughing face, I definitely over-use all of these (insert crying/laughing face here).
MG: What brings out your bliss?
CP: Letting go of stress! Sometimes this is cooking, sometimes this is exercise and sometimes this is laughing so hard my stomach hurts! I’m a naturally high strung person so any way I can relieve stress makes me feel really blissful!
